Food For Thought
As much as education is the fundamental preparation for life, so too is the importance of food and having a well-balanced diet. Nurture & Nature Montessori believe in this philosophy and have included freshly cooked lunches for all children enroled at their schools. They have even gone so far as to ensure that each school has its own dedicated chef who makes use of the freshest ingredients in preparing and cooking healthy lunches and snacks.
“By giving our children healthy lunches and snacks, we try to make sure that they are getting all the essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that they need for healthy growth and development.” Says Pam Schreiber, co-owner and Douglasdale principal.
Eating food containing important nutrients helps children grow and is essential for children’s mental and physical development. As fast as children whiz from classroom to activity, their brains are just as rapidly growing. The foods they eat are important as what they eat affects focus and cognitive skills.
For our fourth school, opening at The Leonardo Lifestyle Centre in Sandton, Nurture & Nature have partnered with renowned chef Paulo Santo, and co-founder of Gemelli restaurant to offer the children healthy, fresh lunches and snacks. “As my new and most important project, The Leonardo, comes to fruition, I take great pleasure in applying my conscious approach to cooking lunches for our preschool learners at The Leonardo on a daily basis. With no compromise on the quality of ingredient, I look forward to feeding the hungry little ones with care and understanding that a growing mind needs to be nurtured and nourished.” Says Santo
The important nutrients for child’s development include.
- Calcium and Vitamin D: Essential for the normal growth and development of bones in children.
- Iron: Supports normal cognitive development in children.
- Vitamin D: Helps support the immune system.
- Omega-3 DHA supports normal brain function.
“We have worked closely with Paulo in developing a menu specific for our children’s growth and development, to make sure that the foods that we give to them make up a balanced diet and include all these nutrients to give the children the best start in life.” Comments Lee-Anne Myerson, founder of Nurture & Nature Montessori and Sandton principal.
